A crypto venture capital partner lost most of his life savings in a targeted phishing attack disguised as a Zoom call.
BlockBeats News: On June 19, Cointelegraph reported that Mehdi Farooq, an investment partner at crypto venture capital firm Hypersphere, revealed on Thursday that he had lost most of his life savings in a targeted phishing attack launched by faking Zoom calls. Farooq explained that the attack started with a message he received on Telegram from Alex Lin, whom he knew. "He said he wanted to catch up," Farooq recalled. The two did communicate before, so this contact seemed normal. Farooq then shared his Calendly link with Lin, who scheduled a meeting for the next day. Just a few minutes before the scheduled call began, Lin raised the need to switch to Zoom Business for "compliance reasons", adding that one of his LPs (limited partners) Kent would be on the call, which is also a familiar name for Farooq. As Farooq was dealing with money management at the time, the request did not alert him. Later, he found out that Alex Lin's real account had been hacked. According to Farooq, the attack was linked to a North Korean group called "dangrouspassword."
