Insiders revealed that US President-elect Donald Trump has met with former SEC commissioner Paul Atkins to consider his appointment as SEC chairman.

An industry insider revealed that Paul Atkins was spotted at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate this week. Another source said that he was scheduled for interviews regarding the SEC Chairman position on Sunday and Monday.

However, according to sources familiar with Paul Atkins' thinking, the position is considered unattractive to him because it would require a major restructuring of the entire institution. It is reported that Paul Atkins believes that the current SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, has mismanaged the organization, and he is unwilling to take on this 'hot potato'.

The former chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Chris Giancarlo, known as the 'encryption dad', also recommended Paul Atkins to take over as the chairman of the SEC. In fact, Chris Giancarlo himself was once considered for the position, but he also expressed unwillingness to clean up Jay Clayton's 'mess'.

Paul Atkins is the founder and CEO of Patomak Global Partners, a global consulting firm specializing in strategy, Risk Management, and regulatory Compliance. Patomak provides services to Crypto Assets companies, but this is just a small part of its diverse business portfolio. Other clients include TradFi clients, publicly traded companies, industry associations, law firms, banks, and insurance companies.

Prior to founding Patomak, Paul Atkins served as an SEC commissioner from 2002 to 2008, nominated by former President George W. Bush. During his tenure at the SEC, his advisors included Mark Uyeda and Hester Pierce, both of whom are now SEC commissioners.

Paul Atkins is highly respected in conservative circles. According to sources close to Paul Atkins, he is friendly with Scott Bessent, founder of hedge fund Key Square Group, who has been nominated by Trump as the next Treasury Secretary.

Those who understand Paul Atkins' thinking revealed that Atkins is unwilling to leave the consulting firm he founded. Sources said that if he were to take on the role of SEC chairman, he would have to resign from his current position and divest himself of his business interests.

Trump's transition team is reportedly considering Teresa Goody Guillén, an encryption currency lawyer, as the SEC chairman, and top executives in the encryption industry, such as Zhao Changpeng, co-founder of Binance, and Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, all support her.

Other SEC chairman candidates mentioned by the market include cryptocurrency executives, former acting comptroller of the currency (OCC) Brian Brooks, Circle's chief legal officer Heath Tarbert, who previously served as CFTC chairman. Another candidate is Brad Bondi, a partner at Paul Hastings.

With Gary Gensler stepping down, who will be the new chairman of the US SEC?
