Subway payments with digital yuan also begin in China

Trials of central bank digital currencies in China are progressing rapidly and new tests are being carried out every day. Now in China, tests for transportation payments by phone have begun.
Some subway stations in Quingdao City will begin accepting digital yuan payments. Launched by a joint effort by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the Digital Currency Research Institute and the city's municipal transportation directorate, the trials will be funded by China Telecom, China Unicom, and a firm called Digital Finance Public Services.
Individuals using digital yuan will be able to make subway payments with e-CNY (digital yuan). Using NFC technology, payments can be made even if the phone is out of battery or disconnected from the operator. As it is known, NFC technology can be easily used in many new generation smartphones.
Earlier this year, the People's Bank of China added the NFC feature to its specially issued digital yuan application. However, this feature was not available for transportation payments. Along with these trials in the city of Qingdao, this situation is also planned to be gradually brought to an end.
Users will have to enter the information of SIM cards belonging to China Unicom or China Telecom operators into the digital yuan application in order to pay with phones that are out of battery or disconnected from the operator. The payment amount will be deducted from the balance when the phones touch the card reader.
