According to a report by Decrypt on April 30, the Bitcoin developer community is engaged in a heated debate over a key technical proposal that aims to remove the OP\_RETURN data storage limitation, allowing for the storage of larger amounts of non-financial data on the Blockchain. Developer Peter Todd proposed this change, arguing that the existing 83-byte limit has been circumvented by users through technical workarounds, and that maintaining these "arbitrary restrictions" is both ineffective and harmful. However, Bitcoin core contributor Jason Hughes and others strongly oppose it, warning that it would fundamentally change the nature of the Bitcoin network. While supporters believe this is a necessary step for Bitcoin to evolve into a Programmable platform, the significant controversy has forced the development team to reconsider the implementation plan. This proposal could determine whether Bitcoin transcends its original positioning as Digital Money.
