PANews reported on April 22 that according to the anti-tariff statement website, many well-known economists, including two Nobel laureates in economics, jointly issued a statement opposing the large-scale unilateral tariff measures implemented by executive order since the Trump administration took office in 2025. The statement criticized the policy as a repeat of the protectionist mistakes of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Act, distorting markets, harming consumers, and violating the principles of free trade and constitutionalism. The statement, which calls for a return to the founding values of "peace, commerce and honest friendship," has been endorsed by more than 1,368 academics and policymakers.
