5 Alternatives to MetaMask Web3 Wallets

The Web3 industry is currently developing rapidly. In addition to the popular MetaMask, several excellent alternative wallets have emerged. This article will introduce 5 alternatives to MetaMask that can be used for cross-chain DeFi interactions.

MetaMask, as the most popular Web3 wallet on Ethereum and other blockchains, has millions of users. Its main advantages are ease of use, open source, and good integration with most DeFi protocols. However, MetaMask also has some shortcomings:

  • The private key is stored in the browser, which is less secure than a hardware Wallet.
  • By default, connects to Ethereum via Infura. Issues with Infura may lead to network disconnection.
  • The content was not parsed during transaction confirmation, which may make it difficult for non-technical users to understand the specific operations.

Here are 5 alternatives to MetaMask that support interaction with DeFi across multiple blockchains.

Frame

Frame is a privacy-focused Ethereum Wallet that runs on MacOS, Windows, and Linux systems. It allows users to manage all accounts, tokens, and projects, and can connect to any dApp. One of Frame's key features is that it stores private keys outside of the browser, while also supporting mainstream hardware wallets.

After installing Frame, users can seamlessly trade on EVM-compatible chains such as Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, and xDai through the browser extension.

Rabby

Rabby is an open-source Web3 wallet developed by DeBank, a DeFi portfolio tracking tool. It automatically switches to the corresponding blockchain based on the websites visited by the user, providing a convenient multi-chain experience.

To enhance security, Rabby will parse the transaction details in the signature confirmation pop-up. When confirming the transaction, the wallet will clearly state the purpose of the transaction and display the estimated balance change.

Rabby has also improved the security alert feature. Each transaction will be checked by the security engine before the user signs it, and if potential risks are detected, a warning will be issued. Using Rabby may require disabling the MetaMask plugin.

XDEFI Wallet

XDEFI Wallet is a cross-chain browser extension that natively integrates multiple chains such as THORChain, Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, and Terra. Users can perform cross-chain transactions directly within the wallet without the need for centralized intermediaries or wrapped assets.

XDEFI also supports purchasing cryptocurrencies directly with fiat through Ramp. However, this wallet has not been open-sourced yet. It plans to support more blockchains such as Avalanche, Cosmos, Fantom, and Solana in the first quarter of 2022.

Web3Auth

Web3Auth(, the original Torus), is an open-source browser extension that allows users to authenticate using their Google account to access dApps, exchanges, or blockchains.

Users can log in with a single click using their Google account, automatically accessing the built-in wallet in the browser without the need to remember a mnemonic phrase. During the first authentication, Web3Auth will automatically create an account using threshold signature and distributed key generation networks, balancing the security of self-custody with ease of use.

Web3Auth is a branch of MetaMask, integrating tKey and using Shamir's secret sharing to manage keys. The private key is divided into three parts, and as long as two parts can be accessed, it can be recovered.

Wallet 3

Wallet 3 is an open-source non-custodial Wallet that can connect to DeFi applications via the WalletConnect protocol. When users access DeFi applications, they only need to copy the WalletConnect URI, and if Wallet 3 is open and manual connection is enabled, it will automatically connect to the application.

The key features of Wallet 3 include quick account switching, cross-chain transfers, and direct interaction with top DeFi protocols such as Aave and Yearn. Additionally, it provides a portfolio dashboard and supports multiple networks including Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, Avalanche, and Fantom.
