Tesla cyber truck offers free Wi-Fi in Los Angeles after wildfires - Transcript
As recovery and relief efforts intensify in Los Angeles a week after the devastating fires, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Sunday that a fleet of cyber trucks and Starlink terminals will be sent to Southern California.
Musk said the cyber trucks will be used to provide mobile Wi-Fi hotspots to areas without internet access. On Tuesday, high winds caused numerous wildfires in Southern California to grow out of control and spread throughout Los Angeles County. The hardest hit areas were Pacific Palisades, where 23,713 acres burned, and Altadena, where 14,117 acres burned. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department told Decrypt that phone lines in the Altadena area are still down. When asked about the cyber truck deliveries, he said: I was shocked. I heard in the daily briefings that they had received some cyber trucks. The wildfires in Southern California are intensifying and becoming more unpredictable. Strong winds have sparked fires in the Pacific Palisades foothills near Los Angeles and in the Eaton Canyon area near Altadena, north of Pasadena, California. According to the California State Fire Marshal's Office, more than 26,000 acres have burned in California, but the fire is not yet under control. Musk plans to provide free Wi-Fi to the hardest-hit areas of Los Angeles and Malibu with #StarLink terminals on Sunday. He announced plans to deploy cyber trucks. "I apologize to those expecting cyber trucks to be delivered to California in the next few days, Musk wrote on the X website. - "We need to use these trucks as mobile base stations to power Starlink Internet terminals in Los Angeles neighborhoods without Internet. This is not the first time Musk has mobilized #Tesla resources in the wake of natural disasters: in September, he sent Starlink terminals to Asheville, North Carolina, which was devastated by Hurricane Helen. In a subsequent statement, Tesla said it will provide housing for employees affected by the fires.
