White House: Trump–Putin Alaska Summit Won’t Be About Peace or Major Deals

Friday’s meeting between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, is unlikely to result in a ceasefire or major trade agreements. According to the White House, the summit’s main purpose is to assess whether there is a genuine chance to end the war in Ukraine — and potentially lay the groundwork for a future three-way meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Meeting Without Preconditions A senior White House official described the summit’s goal as “trusting Trump’s instincts.” Trump has previously criticized Putin’s “double talk,” but this time, the administration believes there are signals worth exploring. According to the White House, Putin has given Trump a written plan. While its feasibility is questionable, it at least outlines a concrete proposal. Special envoy Steve Witkoff, after returning from Russia last week, told Trump that Putin wanted the meeting. Trump viewed it as an opportunity and agreed to attend without preconditions. The official contents of Putin’s plan have not been disclosed. However, Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the idea of land-for-peace was mentioned — something Zelenskyy immediately rejected. Trump believes he can quickly gauge Putin’s true intentions. “Within two minutes I’ll know if there’s a chance for progress,” he said on Monday. “My answer might be either ‘good luck, keep fighting,’ or ‘we can make a deal.’”

Zelenskyy’s Position Weakened, Putin Senses Opportunity According to a person familiar with internal discussions, corruption allegations have weakened Zelenskyy’s position, potentially giving Putin a political opening. This is why Trump intends to personally assess whether Putin’s proposals are genuine.

Europe Prepares Separate Talks In parallel with preparations for the Alaska summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday with Trump, Zelenskyy, and other European leaders. The discussion will focus on potential pressure strategies against Russia, the status of Russian-occupied territories, security guarantees for Kyiv, and the sequence in which peace negotiations might unfold. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called Friday’s talks “an exercise in listening to the president” — a moment for Trump to gain a clearer picture of whether a path to peace is realistic. She stressed that the meeting will be one-on-one and that a ceasefire is not expected from this first encounter.

Possible Trip to Russia The White House has confirmed that Trump might visit Russia in the future. “There may be plans for a trip to Russia in the future,” Leavitt said.

For now, all attention is focused on the Alaska summit, which the administration sees as a starting point for any potential diplomatic breakthrough between Ukraine, Russia, and NATO partners.
