Why did Murad Mahmudov bet on an older meme coin?

Murad Mahmudov – a veteran investor and prominent supporter of meme coins – has just predicted that the meme coins launched from 2023 and earlier will continue to outperform new tokens. This statement comes as the market enters a strong growth cycle, particularly in the speculative asset class like meme coins.

Why is the capital flow favoring old meme coins?

According to data from CoinGecko, the market capitalization of meme coins has increased by 17.33% in the past month. Among them, Dogecoin (DOGE), Floki (FLOKI), and Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) recorded increases of 22.3%, 46.4%, and 116.6% respectively. Specifically, in the last 24 hours, the meme coin group increased by an additional 4.9%, bringing the total market capitalization to nearly 70 billion USD.

An anonymous analyst nicknamed "boot" stated that the majority of investors are currently shifting their focus to mid and large-cap meme coins with a clear track record, rather than chasing after newly issued tokens.

"The best traders I know have all pivoted to mid and high market cap tokens. Very few of these were launched in 2025, and they completely avoid new projects – no matter how good the story is," boot shared.

He also emphasized that large-cap coins tend to provide relatively more safety compared to smaller, less liquid tokens.

Murad Mahmudov also agrees with this view. In response to the post by boot, he stated: "The meme coins issued in 2023 and some from 2024 will continue to maintain their superior performance."

This forecast somewhat reflects Mahmudov's investment strategy, as his portfolio is approaching its historical peak. A report from Arkham Intelligence shows that his largest held tokens – including SPX6900 (SPX), Gigachad (GIGA), and Retardio (RETARDIO) – are all meme coins released from 2023–2024.

According to analyst Ignas, one of the reasons many new tokens are less attractive is because they lack purpose and are created primarily to serve the personal interests of the founders, rather than the community.

"When I invest in a token, I want to be inspired. But most projects only focus on selling features, without bringing any grand aspirations for investors," Ignas shared.

Another analyst – Xero – believes that the reason old meme coins are favored is that the market is in phase 1 of the growth cycle. During this phase, capital tends to flow into familiar assets before spreading to smaller tokens.

"We need to see the old meme coins establish new highs multiple times before money flows into other tokens," Xero commented.

The summary of the above viewpoints shows that: investors are tending to prioritize safety and efficiency, rather than chasing new trends. Nevertheless, the meme coin market is notoriously unpredictable – and whether this strategy will continue to succeed remains an open question.
